Understanding The 3 Common SS Grades For Lashing Wires & How To Choose The Right One For Your Applications

By Venus Posted July 1, 2021 In Stainless Steel Wires

Lashing wires are a staple product in the construction of any large-scale telecommunications and electric grids. Stainless steel wire manufacturers in India design these lashing wires to be a bad conductor of electricity and heat, making them perfect for binding conducting wires and poles. Also, SS lashing wires are manufactured with a unique annealing process that offers a uniform fine-grain structure throughout wire length and cross-section, offering much higher-yielding point and weight-bearing capabilities. Hence, they can also heave large electric and telecom structural components while transporting and construction.

The major advantage of using stainless steel lashing wires is their impeccable corrosion resistance in open environments. Since most telecommunication and electric grids are openly exposed to harsh weather conditions, making wear resistance a crucial requirement. However, since different stainless steel grades are designed to offer different levels of resistance properties, choosing the right grade to suit your application is key to ensuring long life and lower maintenance costs in structures.

Let’s look at the different grades of lashing wires and applications they are best suited for.

SS 430 Lashing Wires:

SS 430 has been the industry standard for creating lashing wires for general binding applications. Its low carbon and 17% chromium content offers adequate protection from corrosion in typical weather conditions in most countries and is most affordable among other grades.

When used in electric grids and telecom lines in urban areas, it mostly develops a bark surface stain without corrosion. However, it is not suited for or near industries that emit corrosive pollutants. Hence, stainless steel wire manufacturers in India create SS 430 lashing wires for applications in cities and rural areas that are at least 40 km (25 miles) away from such industries.

SS 316 Lashing Wires:

For highly corrosive environments, such as coastal regions or industrial areas, the stainless steel wire suppliers in India usually recommend SS 316. It contains 10% nickel and 2.5-3.0% molybdenum, which prevents reactions with salts, gases, and humidity to a much higher degree.

Hence, it is not only suited for industrial areas with high corrosive gas emissions, but also sustains in coastal regions in the presence of chlorides, sulfides, and extreme humidity. Though costlier than SS 430 grade, it compensated its cost with reduced maintenance and high durability.

SS 302 Lashing Wires:

Many industrial areas and coastal areas didn’t necessarily require the extra resistant properties of SS 316 but couldn’t settle for SS 430. Still, they had to expend a higher budget for SS 316 lashing wires. They needed a grade that was more corrosion resistant than SS 430 and less costly than SS 316. Like SS 316, SS 302 is produced with 8-10% nickel but without any molybdenum, which reduces its making cost. It contains 18-20% chromium, which is slightly higher than SS 430. It turned out to be a perfect choice for constructing communication and electricity lines in industrial and residential areas with a higher profit margin.

Apart from these three grades, some stainless steel manufacturers in India also create SS 304 grade lashing wires and copper lashing wires to meet specific product needs and applications.
